BROWNE'S BEACH has a perpetual problem with debrison its beach. The Beach is a lover's spot, a haven for the homeless and roasting spot for the city's fisher folk. Barbadians are usually attentive not to litter the beach but usually after public holidays or major festive events the beaches are left in a mess.
However, many non-profitable organizations find time throughout the year to clean the beaches along the coastal areas.
Since 2004, the Miss Barbados World (MBW) Organization has been the beneficiary of an extraordinary grassroots effort to educate and enable contestants to become environmental stewards of its beaches. Stephanie Chase, an avid lover of the beach and MBW National Director, is the driving force behind this successful environmental initiative. The 2-Hour Beach Clean-up starts at 7:00 a.m and concludes at 9:00 a.m. To date, MBW Organization has organized 4 beach cleanups, and coordinated more than 70 volunteers who have collected numerous of bags of debris, including glass, plastic, Styrofoam, packaging materials and countless cigarette butts. This year's volunteers of included the contestants and some of their parents. Though the group this year was small they managed to collect 13 LARGE GARBAGE bags of debris. This effort highlights a dedicated and remarkable effort to help make Barbados's beaches clean, beautiful and safe for residents, visitors, and marine animals, too!
After four successful years, the 2-Hour Beach Cleanup stands as a role model for community involvement and improvement.
