INTERVIEW WITH MARIA WALTERS
MBW: Describe yourself in THREE sentences.
MARIA: I am a very determined individual and I don’t allow obstacles to hinder me from achieving my goals. I am very pleasant and I try to only highlight the positive in situations. I hate to argue so whenever possible I avoid arguments.
MBW: What don't most people know about you?
MARIA: I am very sensitive, my feelings are so easily hurt, but I don’t ever show it on the outside, I have mastered the art of hiding my true feelings. Well, I guess the secret is out.
MBW: Which THREE songs must be in your I-Pod?
MARIA: The three songs are, I will survive by Gloria Estefan, I know my redeemer lives by Nicole Mullins and Still I rise by Yolanda Adams.
MBW: Tell us about your “Beauty With a Purpose” project.
MARIA: I have not decided as yet how I am going to organize it, but I do know that I want to do something different because usually when persons lecture about HIV/AIDS its usually dry and you don’t get through to many persons, they forget what was said as soon as they hit the door, so my object is to get the message across in a way that they are interested and that they understand the seriousness of the situation.
MBW: What has been your most memorable sunny day?
MARIA: Had so many, a day at the beach with my family, my father and brother in the water while my mother reads the newspaper on the sand (she is a strong believer of the “sea don’t have no backdoor” theory)and I am reading a good novel in between going in the water and getting something to eat.
MBW: If you were invited to participate in the 2010 Italian Fashion Week which international designer would you like to dress you?
MARIA: I will be totally honest right here; I am not familiar with many designers, so trust me the name that I will list came from the internet a few seconds ago. I would want to be dressed by Fendi, because they have some designs that I wouldn’t feel totally ridiculous if I were to wear them in public.
MBW: Tell us about your favorite liming spot.
MARIA: A total secret, known by only God and myself, but I’ll tell you about the view, it’s a cliff and when you look down all you see is the ocean spread out before you, the air is fresh and the view is spectacular, it’s the total “forget all your problems” spot. And if you happen to get there to watch the sunrise it’s even more breath taking.
MBW: What has been your most embarrassing moment? Describe it.
MARIA: I'm not easily embarrassed and that’s just me being honest. In life something will happen, everybody has their moment. So when it’s your turn just deal with it and move on.
MBW: What facial products do you use?
MARIA: I am a proactive believer; I also use Neutrogena and the original black soap.
MBW: Do you diet, work out or just wing it?
MARIA: I work out three times a week, I do gymnastics and when I have time I try to make dance class. I diet, but to be honest, sometimes I cheat, I have a total weakness for sugar, and my trainer and I are always on the warpath for that. I say Tea time biscuits and orange juice he says egg whites and water.
MBW: What is your X factor?
MARIA: I would have to say that my x-factor is my smile. Persons are always complimenting me on it. I love to smile and it’s useful too, if you know how to use it. I smile at my trainer often but it doesn’t work on him, I still have to run my laps and I still have to do my squats, darn…..I guess it doesn’t work on everybody!!
MBW: What is your personal style?
MARIA: I like to keep it simple really. Not just in my dressing and my make up but in all aspects. I believe in taking life as it comes and just being content.
MBW: What is your weakness if any?
MARIA: I love shoes, and especially since I am short, I love a pair of high heels. I am walking pass the store and I can be almost certain that they wink at me and call my name and I am powerless, I just can’t resist.
MBW: Where will the Miss Barbados World judges score you highest: interview, talent, swimsuit or gown presentation
MARIA: judges will score me highest in talent.
MBW: Why should you be crowned Miss Barbados World 2010?
MARIA: am an excellent example of the beauty and talent that Barbados has to offer.
MBW: What message you would like to send to the other Miss Barbados World contestants?
MARIA: Don't give up, always keep trying and don’t let anybody convince you that you cannot achieve what you have made up your mind to achieve. And even though it’s a competition, lighten up and have some fun, don’t think twice to help another competitor if you can because at the end of the day we are all human beings. We have been set apart as ambassadors for other woman let us lead them by example and behave in a way that is proper and commendable.

Good Morning Maria about the Environmental Beach clean up that you and the other contestants had today.
Stephanie Chase - 10:36pm, Saturday 8 May 2010.
It was a great experience, it actually felt good to be doing something for my environment. And a tourist on the beach actually said to Chaconia, Rochelle and myself " thank you for keeping Barbados beautiful" and I felt proud, because while a lot of persons are trying to destroy our beautiful country I was helping to restore it.

Stephanie Chase - 7:03am, Sunday 23 May 2010.
Thanks Stephanie, I'll be sure to remember the points and pass them on to others as well. I had a wonderful experience at the First Class Fitness Centre actually, as a person who is really into fitness it seems to have everything that I could possibly need and I am grateful that they are our sponsors and I will take full advantage of the opportunity that has been presented by their sponsorship.

We had our seminar on HIV on Sunday and I must say it was very well presented and very informative. Ms Nurse took the time to actually explain how HIV affects the body and how the different medications, which are provided free of cost, help to control the virus. Ms. Nurse did an excellent job, even though some of the terms were very clinical I was still able to relate to what she was saying.

well said Maria!!

You had the filming of your infomercials on Sunday , tell us about the experience.
Stephanie Chase - 1:28pm, Tuesday 1 June 2010.
Sorry about the late response. I had a really good time filming the infomercials and talking about the history of my country, its funny how we pass the land marks in our society that mean so much to our standard of living now and never stop to really think about them. Sunday forced me ,not only to stop and think, but to talk about them as well.

Our official launch which was held on the 1st of June was another great experience. It was good to see the girls come back into the dressing room so excited because they nailed their speech. Maia actually did push ups lol. I felt good about my performance as well and I enjoyed mingling with everybody present at the launch.

Tell us about your experience during the Survivor Challenge
Stephanie Chase - 10:24pm, Saturday 12 June 2010.
Where do I start? To be cut off from civilization was an experience in itself, my cell phone is never off, then to not know where we were going is another, we were in the car having a total blast while discussing that if we think you went left and you really went right how totally lost and stranded we would be. The challenges were fun, I particularly enjoyed the tug o' war, even though my team lost, and the roast breadfruit, corn beef and biscuits bring back childhood memories from when my grandmother was alive. I was totally proud of our (Simmone and myself) coconut branch house and was actually looking forward to sleeping there and the camp fire was a new and exciting experience for me and was really pretty to look at. But in essence I really enjoyed everybody's company and its one of those experiences that you file away in your memory bank and look back on when you need a good laugh. Thanks for the experience Step.
